FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team won its seventh straight game with a 15-4 victory over Cornell to complete a three-game sweep on Sunday at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
Six Mason pitchers (
Konner Eaton,
Nick Martins,
Tyler Herkey,
Jalen Grant,
Kyle Smith,
Logan Rumberg) combined for a season-high 18 strikeouts in the game, just one shy of tying the program record.
The Patriots improved to 9-3 in their first 12 home games of the season. Mason has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 76-24 during the seven-game winning streak.
On Sunday, every player in the starting lineup had a hit, drove in a run or scored a run. Junior right fielder
Derek Wood drove in three runs, while senior third baseman
South Trimble, sophomore shortstop
Carsen Pracht and sophomore first baseman
Reece Woody each plated a pair of runs in the game.
Mason (11-8) fell behind in the first inning when Cornell (0-12) scored a run against Patriots redshirt freshman starter
Konner Eaton.
Cornell sophomore catcher John Quinlan led off with a double and scored on an error to put the Big Red in front, 1-0.
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the second against Cornell freshman starter Noah Keller. Graduate student designated hitter
Ryan Archibald was hit by a pitch and stole second. Woody then drew a walk and with one out, Pracht beat out an infield single to third to load the bases.
Wood stepped in and ripped a double down the left field line just inside the bag, with Archibald and Woody racing home to make it a 2-1 game. Trimble followed with a ground out to drive in Wood from third for a 3-1 lead.
Cornell evened the score in the top of the third with a pair of runs on a RBI-single by Quinlan and RBI-double by sophomore first baseman Max Jensen.
In the top of the fifth, the Big Red edged in front against Mason junior
Nick Martins. Quinlan led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. Jensen knocked in his second run of the game with a single to right to lift the Big Red to a 4-3 advantage. It would be their last run of the game.
The Patriots broke the game open in the home half of the fifth against Keller and Cornell freshman reliever Beck Urofsky. Mason sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs on seven hits, three walks, two errors and a wild pitch to build a 14-4 lead.
In the inning, junior center fielder
Jordan Smith had a double and a single, scored two runs and drove in another. Freshman left fielder
James Quinn-Irons collected two singles and scored two runs, Archibald walked twice and scored two runs and Woody drove in two runs with a single.
Pracht singled, reached on an error, knocked in two runs and scored a run. Sophomore catcher
Connor Dykstra singled, was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
The Patriots scored the final run of the day in the seventh on a RBI-single by Wood for the 15-4 final score.
For the Patriots, Eaton allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and struck out nine in 3.0 innings. Martins (1-1) gave up one run on three hits and struck out three to earn his first win as a Patriot.

Cornell used seven pitchers in the game. For the Big Red, Keller allowed three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings. Urofsky (0-3) surrendered nine runs, six earned, on five hits and retired two batters in his outing. Senior Spencer Edwards gave up two unearned runs on two hits.
Pracht went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored,
Jordan Smith was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored and Woody finished 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and three runs scored.
The Patriots wrap up their 13-game homestand against William & Mary on Tuesday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
