FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team swept a doubleheader from Saint Peter's, 15-6 and 9-1, on Saturday at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
Freshman left fielder
James Quinn-Irons hit his first career grand slam and drove in six runs to lead the Patriots in game one. Senior second baseman
Brett Stallings knocked in five runs and sophomore starter
Chad Gartland tossed seven scoreless innings in game two.
GAME ONE
Mason (5-8) jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Saint Peter's (0-12) in the first four innings.
With two outs in the bottom of the first against Saint Peter's sophomore starter Jack Gannon, junior center fielder
Jordan Smith walked and stole second. Quinn-Irons followed with a single to right field with Smith racing around to score to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
After junior designated hitter
Mark Trotta was hit by a pitch, sophomore first baseman
Reece Woody singled up the middle with Quinn-Irons rumbling home to make it 2-0.
With two outs in the second inning, senior third baseman
South Trimble walked and Stallings singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. After Stallings stole second, Smith reached on a throwing error, with both Trimble and Stallings scoring on the play to double the lead to 4-0.
The Patriots tacked on three more runs in the home half of the fourth. Trimble led off with a walk and Stallings reached on an error. Smith followed with a double to center field to plate Trimble to extend the lead to 5-0.
Quinn-Irons drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and with two outs, Woody delivered with a RBI-single to knock in his second run of the game to pad the advantage to 7-0.
The Peacocks got on the board against Mason graduate student starter
Ben Shields with two outs in the top of the fifth.
Junior designated hitter Nick Markantonatos and junior first baseman Sam Haney both singled and moved into scoring position on a balk. Junior second baseman Jack Eichler plated both baserunners with a double to left field to cut the lead to 7-2.
Mason added four more two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth with one swing of the bat. With one out, junior right fielder
Derek Wood bunted his way on and Trimble reached on catchers' interference. After a fly out and a stolen base, Smith walked to load the bases.
Quinn-Irons stepped to the plate and smashed his first career grand slam to straight-away center over the 400-foot marker to make the score 11-2.
In the home half of the seventh, Trimble drove in a run with a double and Stallings knocked in another with a single off Saint Peter's freshman reliever Ryan Seymour to increase the lead to 13-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Peacocks batted around and scored four runs on two hits and four walks to make it a 13-6 game but that's as close as Saint Peter's would get.
Mason loaded the bases in the eighth. Freshman catcher

Carsen Pracht both singled and Wood drew a walk. Trimble forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch and Stallings knocked in another with a sacrifice fly for the 15-6 final score.
For the Patriots, Shields (3-0) allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks to earn the win. Sophomore
Britt Yount gave up four runs, one earned, on two hits in 1.2 innings. Graduate student
Nolan Lamere tossed 1.1 scoreless and allowed two hits with two strikeouts in his Mason debut. Freshman
Logan Rumberg pitched a scoreless ninth.
For the Peacocks, Gannon allowed seven runs on five hits in 3.2 innings and took the loss. Seymour surrendered six runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Junior Kenji Lamdin gave up two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning and junior Austin Rohlfing retired the three batters he faced in the eighth.
Quinn-Irons went 2-for-3 with a grand slam, six RBI and two runs scored. Stallings was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Woody finished 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Trimble reached base five times, drove in two runs and scored four times.
GAME TWO
After two scoreless innings, Mason (6-8) took the lead against Saint Peter's (0-13) sophomore starter Kyle Mahady in the bottom of the third.
Pracht walked and stole both second and third. Trimble drew a walk and Stallings then singled through the right side to put the Patriots in front, 1-0. Smith plated Trimble from third with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-0.
With one out in the fifth, Wood singled and stole second. Stallings came through with a two-out RBI-double to left for a 3-0 lead.
While the Patriots built the advantage, Gartland kept the Peacocks off the board in his seven innings of work before turning the game over to the bullpen. He scattered five singles and struck out six.
The Patriots batted around in the seventh and scored five runs on four hits against Peacocks junior Robert Black and classmate Zach Walker to expand the lead to 8-0.
Stallings drove in two with a single, Woody plated a run with a single, sophomore catcher
Connor Dykstra knocked in a run with a double and sophomore pinch runner
Alex Knapp raced home on a wild pitch.
In the eighth, Wood walked and Trimble doubled to put runners on second and third. Stallings knocked in his fifth run of the game with ground out to make it 9-0.
Saint Peter's scored its lone run on a throwing error in the ninth.
For the Patriots, Gartland (2-0) tossed 7.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. Freshman
Ryan Edmonds pitched 1.0 scoreless inning and graduate student
Robbie Dudzinski gave up one unearned run in 1.0 inning of work in his Mason debut.
Stallings went 4-for-5 with five RBI and Wood was 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Smith, Woody and Dykstra each drove in a run.
The Patriots and Peacocks wrap up the series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. at Spuhler Field.
