PITTSBURGH – The George Mason University men's basketball team dropped a 75-52 contest at Duquesne on Wednesday night at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
Senior forward
Josh Oduro led the Green & Gold with his 10
th double-double of the season, tallying team highs in points (13), rebounds (13) and assists (3) in 27 minutes.
The Patriots shot 37.3 percent (19-51) for the game and committed an A-10 season-high 21 turnovers. Those miscues led to a 25-13 edge for Duquesne in points off turnovers for the game.
Mason was without
Victor Bailey Jr. (hand) and
Blake Jones (concussion protocol) for the game.
"When your margin for error is small you just have to be really good on both sides of the ball," head coach
Kim English said. "We weren't and that's the outcome you get. It's disappointing, but I think it was deserved, When you're down guys, everybody has to step up their game up individually, and collectively we have to play better as a group. I don't think we did that tonight."
The Dukes shot 46 percent (29-63) and made 37.5 percent (9-24) of their 3-point attempts.
Graduate guard
DeVon Cooper chipped in 12 points, knocked down three triples and dished out two assists. Fellow graduate student
Ginika Ojiako added nine points (3-5 FG) in 12 minutes.
The two teams played to an early 16-16 tie, before the Dukes rattled off an 11-0 run to take a 27-16 lead with 4:54 to go in the half. The Dukes took a 31-23 advantage into the break.
The Patriots moved within seven at 39-32, but a 14-2 run by Duquesne pushed the Dukes in front by 19 (53-34) with 9:59 to play. George Mason could not move closer than 16 for the remainder of the game.
George Mason returns home for a Saturday afternoon contest vs. Rhode Island. Tip-off between the Patriots and Rams is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised on MASN2. George Mason won the first matchup this season, 79-72, in Kingston on Jan. 21.
