FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team has been picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 Conference this season, the league announced on Tuesday.  The preseason poll was conducted by the league's 12 head coaches.

Davidson (130 points) has been predicted to finish first including nine first-place votes.  VCU has been projected to finish second (125 points) including four first-place votes, while Richmond (103 points) and Saint Louis (103 points) tied for third.

Last season, the Patriots qualified as the fifth seed for the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship and won their opening round game against Rhode Island.

Mason finished the 2022 season with a 23-33 overall record, including a mark of 13-11 against conference opponents.  The Patriots won four of their eight conference series.

The Patriots return four starting position players and nine pitchers from last year's roster, including two weekend starters.  Mason added depth on the mound, with 12 of the 23 newcomers on this year's roster joining the pitching staff.

Mason returns graduate student pitchers Hugh O'Hara, Mason Posey and Ben Shields, senior Ryan Peterson, junior Christian Mracna, sophomores Chad Gartland, Jalen Grant and Britt Yount, along with redshirt-freshman Konner Eaton.

Seven freshman pitchers (Ryan Edmonds, Chris Fidanza, Tyler Herkey, Connor Knox, Logan Rumberg, Michael Salina, Owen Stewart), two juniors (Nick Martins, Kyle Menaker) and three graduate students (Robbie Dudzinski, Nolan Lamere, Kyle Smith) join the Patriots in the bullpen for the 2023 campaign.

Seniors Craig Miles, Jr. and South Trimble, along with junior Jordan Smith and sophomore Alex Knapp return to patrol the outfield.  Senior Brett Stallings and sophomore Carsen Pracht are back in the middle of the infield, while sophomore Connor Dykstra enters his second year behind the plate.

The Patriots open the season with three games against Florida International University Feb. 17-19 at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Fla.
