WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason women's basketball team fell to George Washington, 58-39 on Sunday afternoon to split this season Revolutionary Rivalry.
Offensively, the Patriots were led by senior
Sonia Smith, who knocked down 11 points for her sixth-straight game in double-figure scoring. She also dished out a game-high four rebounds.
The Patriots (11-13, 4-7) jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first, but cooled off from there as George Washington was able to string together a 24-5 run over a 10-minute span from 3:57 in the first quarter to 3:28 remaining in the second quarter. GW got hot from deep, shooting 5-9 from three-point range to lead 31-24 at halftime.
Mason was unable to get the offense going in the third, shooting just 2-15 from the field. The Colonials (16-8, 8-3) converted seven shots from the field to extend their lead to 21 after the third quarter.
The Patriot defense locked down in the fourth, allowing just eight points and forcing the Colonials into 17.6% shooting from the field. It was not enough however as GW held Mason to just 10 points in the final stanza to limit Mason to their lowest point total of the season.
PATRIOT POINTS
- Senior Nalani Kaysia was just one point off of her fifth-straight double-double, finishing with a team-high 11 rebounds and nine points on 50% shooting from the field. She also contributed two blocks and two steals.
- Graduate student J-Naya Ephraim had a solid day, contributing seven points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal.
- Mason committed just nine fouls as a team, its' second-lowest total this season, to only put GW on the line four times.
- Both teams were able to notch five steals, with four different Patriots tallying at least one.
