FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team will travel to the nation's capital on Sunday for a noon tip with Revolutionary Rival George Washington.
In the first match-up of the season on Jan. 16, the Patriots dominated, leading for 31 minutes after pulling ahead early in the second quarter, to take a 67-57 victory. Mason used a 24-point third quarter to hold off a late fourth-quarter push by GW.
In the second installment of this season's Revolutionary Rivalry, Mason will look to sweep a team for the first time since the 2018-19 season when it beat George Washington twice. Overall, it will be the 45th all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Colonials holding a 15-29 record over the Patriots.
Since their loss to Mason, the Colonials have strung together four-straight wins over VCU, Loyola Chicago, Dayton and Duquesne. On the other hand, the Patriots are coming off of a tough road loss to Saint Louis, 68-56.
PATRIOT POINTS
- For the third-straight game, senior Nalani Kaysia registered a double-double, posting a career-high 22 rebounds to go along with 13 points and three blocks. The 22 rebounds are the most by an women's or men's player in a single game in the A-10 this season.
- Joining Kaysia in double-figure scoring against the Billikens was Taylor Jameson (13) and Sonia Smith (10). The three are all averaging double-figuring scoring in A-10 play this season.
- Mason currently has the fourth-best scoring defense in the A-10, limiting opponents to 61.9 ppg.
- The Patriots rank third in the league with 13.4 offensive rebounds.
- Individually, Taylor Jameson ranks 15th in the A-10 with 13.3 points per game, Nalani Kaysia ranks 11th with 0.9 blocks per game and 10th with 7.9 rebounds per game and Paula Suarez ranks 16th with 3.0 assists per game
- Kaysia is also averaging a double-double in conference contests with 11.9 points and 10.9 rebounds.
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
George Washington began the season with an 8-5 out-of-conference record, including a win over common opponent Coppin State, 61-51, on Dec. 22. The Colonials are currently 7-3 in A-10 play, and have won four-straight since they lost to the Patriots on Jan. 16 in Fairfax.
Two Colonials are averaging double-digit scoring performances, Mia Lakstigala (14.6) and Nya Robertson (13.5). Lakstigala is also second on the team in rebounding with 6.0 boards per game while Robertson is second in assisting, averaging 1.9 per game.
Mayowa Taiwo is the best rebounder for the Buff and Blue, averaging 10.3 per game, a mark that ranks at the top of the Atlantic 10. She is also putting up 8.6 points per game and has registered seven double-doubles so far this season while leading the team in steals with 1.9 per contest. Asjah Inniss leads GW with 2.2 assists per game.
