Wrestling Splits Matches at Tri-Dual in Brooklyn

Fairfax, Va.— The George Mason wrestling team split its tri-dual today in Brooklyn today against LIU and Drexel. The Patriots soundly defeated the Sharks, 35-6, but came up short against Drexel, 28-16.
 
The Green and Gold (11-5, 2-2) won its 11th match of the season today against LI, surpassing the most wins in a season since the 2007-08 season when the Patriots finished with a 13-5 record.

Mason won nine matches against the LIU Sharks, dropping only a forfeited match at 133 pounds.

Freshman Markel Baker (24-9) edged both his opponents today to lead the Patriots in wins on the season. 

Fellow freshman Evan Maag filled in for starter Nate Higley today and won both matches at 149. The Bethlehem, Pa. native earned an 18-6 major decision against No. 24 Luke Nichter from Drexel and avenged an earlier season loss to LIU's Drew Witham with a fall (1:10).

Grad student Peter Pappas (157) improves to 17-2 with two decisions today.

In his only match today, Tyler Kocak (174) defeated Drexel's Josh Stillings, 4-1. 

Messiah Open: Four Mason wrestlers participated in the Messiah Open unattached today. With a 3-0 record Ben Monn earned medalist honors with a 3-0 record, including two technical falls. Paul Pierce finished in third place (165) with a 4-1 record. The grad student had two major decisions. Nick Foster finished with a 4-2 record. Freshman Alex Frowert (157) went 1-2.
