BURKE, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team took care of business in its final indoor match of the season Saturday night, knocking off Mt. St. Mary's 6-1 at the Burke Racquet & Swim Club.
Mason won the doubles point and five of six singles matches to claim victory.
"The guys played well today and it was great experience for some of our younger players," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We're starting to get more confident in our games and it's showing through in the matches. We're excited for the outdoor portion of the season starting Monday!"
The Patriots started off the night with a clean sweep of doubles. At No. 1, senior
Rithik Sardana and freshman
Monil Lotlikar grabbed a 6-1 victory, while graduate student
Rishab Sardana and sophomore
Niza Simunyola won 6-4 over the Mountaineers' Papayoanou/Allen tandem. At No. 3, freshmen
Zavan Fahim and
Alvaro Pedraza took a 6-3 win.
Sardana and Simunyola are now 3-1 in dual doubles action this season.
In singles,
Rithik Sardana made quick work at No. 1 while taking a 6-2, 7-5 win over Elliot Stevens.
Rishab Sardana claimed a tiebreak win at No. 2, while Lotlikar cruised at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0) over Papayoanou.
Simunyola continued his torrid start to the dual season with a blistering 6-1, 6-1 win over Pablo Martinez Zuccari. He is 4-1 in his five dual matches this spring.
Pedraza also won at No. 5 in third set, tiebreaking fashion.
Mason is now off from competition until its spring break trip to Hilton Head. The Patriots open play on March 14 against Georgetown (Ky.).
