FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball will get back on the road, this time to New York City, to battle with Fordham in their last regular season road game.
The Patriots are coming off of an offensive onslaught on Wednesday, pouring on the most points in almost four years in an 80-63 road win against Loyola Chicago. Meanwhile, Fordham lost their second-straight A10 to La Salle in Philadelphia, falling 61-49 to the Explorers on Thursday.
Sunday's match-up will be the 15th meeting between the two programs. Fordham has won every contest as members of the Atlantic 10, but prior to that, Mason was 3-1 against the Rams. The Patriots' last win came in 2008 at home in overtime. The last time the two teams met, Fordham was victorious in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, 66-50.
PATRIOT POINTS
- Against the Ramblers, the Patriots (13-14, 6-8) were led offensively by senior Tamia Lawhorne, who scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and a season-high four three-pointers.
- Sonia Smith (13) and Nalani Kaysia (11) also scored in double-digits, while Kaysia also grabbed 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double in the last seven games.
- Junior Taylor Jameson paced the offense with a career-high six assists, to go along with nine points and four rebounds, adding to the team's season-high 18 assists
- The Patriots registered seven blocks for the second-straight game, with five players registering at least one. They also out-rebounded Loyola Chicago 45-23.
- Mason currently has the fifth-best scoring defense in the A-10, limiting opponents to 62.0 ppg. The Patriots rank fourth in the league with 13.7 offensive rebounds.
- Taylor Jameson ranks 20th in the A-10 with 12.0 points/game. Paula Suarez ranks 17th with 3.0 assists/game. Nalani Kaysia ranks sixth with 1.1 blocks/game and ninth with 8.2 rebounds/game and remains one of just five student-athletes to average a double-double in A10 games.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Fordham went 8-5 in out-of-conference play, highlighted by a win over then-RV Yale, 80-67. The Rams also dropped two close games to then-#17 Maryland (83-76) and then-RV Princeton (70-67) back in November. Since then, Fordham has gone 8-5 in A10 play, but are on a two-game losing streak to UMass and La Salle.
The Rams boast the conference's top-two scorers in Asiah Dingle and Anna DeWolfe. Dingle averages 19.3 points/game and is also first on the team in assisting with 3.3/game (13th, A10) and steals with 3.3/game (2nd, A10). Meanwhile, Wolfe averages a team and conference-second -best 18.3 points/game.
Kaitlyn Downey is the top rebounder and blocker for the Rams, averaging 8.2 boards/game (8th, A10) and 0.8 blocks/game (12th, A10) and is third on the team in scoring at 10.7 points/game. Sarah Karpell is second on the team and 15th in the A-10 with 3.2 assists/game. She is also ninth in the A-10 with a 1.5 assist/turnover ratio.
