CHICAGO, Ill. – The George Mason women's basketball team scored the most points in a game in almost four years to pick up a huge road win over Loyola Chicago, 80-63.
The Patriots (13-14, 6-8) were led offensively by senior
Tamia Lawhorne, who scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and a season-high four three-pointers.
Senior
Nalani Kaysia posted her fifth double-double in the last seven games on 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The two teams traded points and the lead throughout the first quarter, with the Ramblers (6-20, 1-12) taking their last lead of the night with 1:16 on the clock, 14-13. However, Mason rattled off the last seven points of the quarter, capped by a
Sonia Smith three-pointer at the buzzer, to take a 20-16 lead at the first quarter break.
The Patriots (13-14, 6-8) extended their lead in the second, led by five points from Lawhorne and scoring from six different players. After Loyola Chicago tied the game at 22-apiece, Mason went on another seven-point run. Two Rambler free throws cut the lead to five at the 3:46 mark, but Mason closed the quarter on 5-5 shooting and led by 13 at the halfway point.
Lawhorne led a hot-shooting Mason team in the third, shooting 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from deep as the Patriots connected on 11-15 from the field. Mason's lead ballooned to as many 28 on Lawhorne's fourth three-point field goal with 1:03 remaining in the quarter.
The Ramblers were able to cut into the lead a bit in the fourth, but Mason continued to push, with four different Patriots registering a point, leading to every player that stepped on the court for Mason to register at least two points during the game.
