Fairfax, Va. -- Nate Higley earned a championship and four other wrestlers were placewinners at the A Better Way Athletics Patriot Open held at the George Mason Field House today.
Hilgley won all five matches, two by fall and one by major decision in the 141-pound weight class. He improves to 8-0 this season. He opened the tournament with a fall (1:47) against Morgan State's Carter Nix and a major decision against American's Cael McIntyre. After two straight decisions against Michael Pizzuto from Maryland and Penn's Nico Nardone, the redshirt sophomore won the championship match with a fall at 24 seconds into the match against Evan Mouglalian from PRTC.

Pierce began the tournament with a tech fall against Franklin & Marshall's RJ Moore, 17-1. He defeated Sammy Starr (Navy) and Ryan Bolletino (Sacred Heart) with decisions en route the the championship bout. Simon Ruiz (Spartan) defeated Pierce 11-5.
JT Chance won five matches before dropping a 12-5 decision to Rider's Colton Wahleski in the championship bout. The redshirt freshman won all five matches by bonus points, including two falls, against Somnoma Zida (UA) and Reed Fullmer (PRTC). He earned a tecnical fall, 16-1 against Rider's Hogan Horsey and defeated American's Devon Capato with a major decision, 11-0.
Loranzo Rajaonarivelo and
Donovan Sprouse each earned fourth place finishes at 157 and 285 pounds respectively. Rajaonarivelo finished with a 3-2 record, while Sprouse finished, 2-2.
Next Up: The Patriots will be back on the mat after a break for finals. Mason will travel to North Carolina to take on Gardner-Webb University at 1:00 pm, and Queens University of Charlotte at 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 21.
