PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Led by a career night from junior
Camille Larkin, the George Mason women's volleyball team downed Duquesne, 3-1.
Larkin led the Mason offense with a career and game-high 14 kills at a .444 clip. It marks the third time this season that she has posted double-figures as the middle hitter now has a personal best 176 kills on the season.
Despite hitting just .121 in the opening stanza, the Patriots (8-20, 4-12) used stout defense to limit Duquesne to a negative clip with 12 errors. Freshman
Chelsea Colter led the way with four of her team-high six blocks to power Mason to a 6-0 run in the middle of the set to regain the lead. The Dukes (11-13, 6-10) cut the lead back to two, 21-19, but three kills from the Patriots gave them the 25-19 win.
The Patriots led for all of set two, using several short runs in the beginning of the fame to take a 13-8 lead. The hosts would score two-straight to get within three, but it would be the closest they could get as Mason once again used strong defense to hold off a comeback. Six different Patriots recorded a kill as the team committed a game-low five errors to win the set 25-20.
Duquesne found its' groove in the third set, using an error-free offense to take an early 12-7 lead on back-to-back 4-0 runs. The Patriots were unable to mount a comeback as they hit at a team-low .116 and Duquesne cut into the match lead, 2-1, with a 25-18 victory.
The fourth set proved to be an offensive battle, with the teams combining for 35 kills and 15 tie scores. Down 14-11, the Patriots battled back to tie the set at 15-all, beginning a trade of points and four ties until 22-22. Duquesne took a 24-23 lead, and facing set point, Mason took a timeout to reset. - Outside hitters Caroline Rodriguez and Ewelina Gacek also registered double-figure kills with 10 each, while Rodriguez also contributed a career-best four blocks while Gacek notched a double-double with a personal best 13 digs
- Freshman Chelsea Colter tallied a career-best nine kills at a .389 clip. Gelcound and Olyvia Kennedy also contributed nine
- Grace Kristofic tallied a season and team-best 31 assists
- Libero Gracie Halley tallied a game-best 24 digs and defensive specialist Autumn Martinez-Robinson notched 10 as the Patriots tallied their third-most digs this season
