Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team finished the Mason Duals with a 3-1 record to begin the 2023-24 dual slate.
The Patriots edged the Citadel in the opening match, 18-17. The teams split the ten matches, but the Patriots
Malachi DuVall earned the only fall in the match against Adam Ortega at 184 pounds. Mason was down two points entering the final match at 285 pounds, but transfer
Chad Nix clinched the match with a 10-3 decision against John Chesser, who Nix had beaten 10-6 at the Battle of the Citadel last weekend.
Conference opponent Clarion defeated the Patriots, 23-12 in the second match. Mason jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 2-1 decisions in overtime. Ben Monn defeated the Golden Eagles Malik Hardy at 125 pounds and
Shawn Nonaka edged Scott Johnson at 133. Clarion took its first lead, 7-6, with two straight decisions. The Patriots
DJ McGee improved to 5-0 after defeating #25 Alejandro Herrera-Rondon at 157 pounds, 4-2.
Evan Maag gave Mason its last lead, 12-7, with a win at 164.
The Patriots defeated NCAA DII powerhouse #10 Millersville, 32-8 in the third match. Mason earned two falls, a technical fall, and three major decisions in the dual. Malachi earned his second fall of the day with a win over Tyler Hurst at 184 pounds, and
Sean Coughlin (174) defeated Andrew Vogelbacher.
In his first match of the day,
Dominic Hargrove (141) earned a tech fall, 20-5 (7:00) against Aidan Micheli. Three Patriots notched major decisions: JB Dragovitch (125),
Kaden Cassidy (149), and
Loranzo Rajaonarivelo (157).
Mason defeated Williams College 29-15 in the final match of the day.
Malachi DuVall earned his third fall on the day against Williams Tyler Hurst.
