TOWSON, Md. – The George Mason women's and men's swimming and diving teams competed in their first dual meet of the season on Saturday afternoon at Burdick Pool in Towson, Md.
The Patriots' women's team won two of 16 events and fell to the Tigers, 198-102. The Mason men's team finished first in six of 16 events but dropped a 189-105 decision to Towson.
On the men's side, sophomore
Tate Anderson won the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.43) for the second year in a row against the Tigers, with sophomore
Joshua Hochard fifth (1:47.73). Anderson also won the 200-yard IM (1:55.29) with freshman
Alex Crown fourth in the event (1:58.66).
Crown took the top spot in the 1000-yeard freestyle (9:41.44) with classmate
Cody Scifres third in the event (9:55.15). Scifres placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.17).
Anderson touched the wall second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.67) while sophomore
Jett Lee placed fourth (1:58.38) and junior
Joe Durocher was fifth (2:00.60). Lee finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (52.74).
In the 50-yard freestyle, junior
Zane Roberts touched the wall first (21.37) for the second year in a row against Towson and junior
Logan Skiles was fifth (21.88).
Roberts placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (47.80) and Hochard was fifth (48.18).
Junior
Tyler Lentine touched the wall second in both the 100-yard breaststroke (58.28) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.41).
Freshman
Ian Rodgers won two events. He claimed the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.66) and freshman
Colin Murtaugh finished fifth (1:59.42). Rodgers also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (50.51) with Murtaugh fifth (52.99).
The combination of Lentine, Rodgers, Lee and Roberts placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.51). The group of sophomore
Jack Chapman, freshman
Colby Lane, Durocher and Hochard was fourth (1:37.90).
In the 400-yard freestyle, the team of
Tate Anderson, Roberts, Rodgers and Hochard placed third (3:09.64) while the group of sophomore
Michael Bock, freshman
Ian Jones, Crown and Murtaugh was fourth (3:17.00).
In the diving events, freshman
Christian Anderson placed second in both the one-meter (194.93 points) and three-meter (183.45 points).
On the women's side, senior
Abigail Murtaugh won the 100-yard butterfly (57.94) with sophomore
Peyton Brehmer third (58.21) and graduate student
Leah Riley fifth (59.44).
Murtaugh took second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.16) with junior
Emma Burke fourth (2:13.92).
Brehmer finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.34) and junior
Shannon Judge was third (24.97).
Mason went one-two in the 200-yard IM, with junior
Ali Tyler claiming the top spot in the (50.51) and sophomore
Angelina Zeidan second (2:12.81). Junior
Anka Whelan was fourth in the event (2:14.95).
The Patriots took three of the top four spots in the 200-yard backstroke, with Tyler second (2:07.17), Whelan third (2:08.91) and freshman
Clare Smith fourth (2:09.01).
Tyler placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.15) and freshman
Sarah Dichak was fifth (1:56.83). Dichak placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.57) with freshman
Casey Tingen fourth in the event (5:22.44).
In the 100-yard backstroke, Whelan was third (58.75), Tingen finished fourth (1:00.06) and Smith was fifth (1:00.57).
In the 100-yard freestyle, Judge was third (53.85), DeJong fourth (53.87) and Zeidan fifth (54.76).
Junior
Emma DeJong placed fourth (1:08.63) in the 100-yard breaststroke with sophomore
Ainsley Toews fifth (1:10.07) and freshman
Alayna Brooker sixth (1:10.74). Freshman
Kristen Ivey finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.26) and Toews was sixth (2:32.47).
In the 1000-yard freestyle, Ivey finished second (10:43.96), sophomore Grace Sweeney fourth (11:12.45) and junior
Kylie Thompson sixth (11:26.47).
The group of Whelan, DeJong, Brehmer and Judge placed third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.99). The team of DeJong, Judge, Brehmer and Tyler took second in the 400-yard freestyle (3:33.86) while freshman
Hannah Magdeburg, Dichak, Tingen and Riley finished third in the event (3:39.08).
In the diving events, junior
Emma McDonald was third in both the one-meter (204.90 points) and three-meter (201.90 points).
The Patriots are back in action at the Richmond Duals Oct. 13-14 in Hampton, Va.
