Women’s Volleyball on the Road to Play Dayton

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team will complete its' three-game road swing this weekend when it travels to Dayton to take on the nationally-ranked Flyers in two matches.
 
A season ago, Dayton downed Mason twice in Fairfax, keeping alive an unbeaten streak against the Patriots since both teams first met in the Atlantic 10 in 2013.
 
Last night, the Patriots fell in a midweek matchup with George Washington, 3-2. Led by the return of Nani Spaar and her fourth double-double of the season on a career-high 20 kills and 10 digs, the Patriots cashed in a season-best 69 kills. Gabriella Gelfound also contributed a double-double on a career-high 19 kills and 21 assists.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
  • Ewelina Gacek leads the Patriots with 172 kills on the season, adding 11 to her total last night against the Revolutionaries. Nani Spaar leads the Patriots with 3.83 kills/set (2nd, A-10) and is second on the team with 157 kills
  • Gracie Halley tallied 19 digs against GW, bringing her season total to 276. Her 4.00/set puts her at seventh overall in the Atlantic 10
  • Damiana Bova-Ford matched her career-best with 29 assists and she leads the team with 332 and 4.88/set
  • At the net, Camille Larkin leads Mason with a .389 hitting percentage, hitting over .500 with 6+ kills in the last three matches, for 101 kills on the season. She also leads the Patriots with 58.0 total blocks
  • After another solid night of serving, Mason tallied eight service aces and the Patriots rank second in the conference with 1.80 aces per set
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The 20th-ranked Flyers are riding an 11-match win streak and remain unbeaten in conference play, including two wins over reigning Atlantic 10 Champions Loyola Chicago to open the conference season. Dayton's only two losses were to No. 12 Marquette and No. 2 Louisville, both in five sets.
 
The Flyers lead the Atlantic 10 in multiple categories on both sides of the ball, including hitting percentage (.276), blocks (2.34/set) and service aces (2.15/set). Dayton also leads opponents in several major categories, most notably kills, digs and blocks.
 
Offensively, Lexie Almodovar leads the Flyers and the Atlantic 10 with 4.41 kills/set and is one of just two athletes in the A-10 with 200+ kills. Reigning A-10 Player of the Week Taylor Russell is second on the team with 182 kills and leads the team and A-10 with 34 service aces (0.54/set). Alyssa Miller leads the Atlantic 10 with 666 total assists. Defensively, Amelia Moore is the A-10 leader in blocks with 79 total and 1.27 per set. Karissa Kaminski is second in the conference with 292 total digs, good for 4.56 per set.
 
UP NEXT
The Patriots will return to Fairfax to host the defending Atlantic 10 Champions, Loyola Chicago. Matches with the Ramblers are set for Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
