RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team fell to VCU in three sets on Sunday afternoon on the road.
Defensively,
Gracie Halley led all players with 12 digs during the match. The libero has tallied double-figure digs in all but two matches this season.
The Patriots (7-19, 3-11) got off to a strong start in set one, jumping out to an 11-5 lead, capped by a kill from
Caroline Rodriguez. VCU would slowly begin chipping away until a they forced a Mason timeout trailing 14-15. The Rams (14-10, 11-3) would ultimately string together a 9-0 run to take a 20-15 lead. The teams traded points down the stretch, but VCU held off Mason for the set one win.
After a VCU service error and two
Gabriella Gelfound aces gave Mason a 3-0 lead to open the second set, the Rams went on a 5-0 run to take the lead that they would not surrender the rest of the set. Gelfound led the Patriots with three kills, but the VCU defense limited Mason to a negative hitting clip en route to a 25-18 win.
Both teams registered their best hitting percentages of the match in set three, but a game-high 16 kills by the Rams made the difference. VCU slowly built a three-point lead to force a Patriots' timeout at 9-6, but Mason could never get closer than three down the stretch, as VCU powered through to the 3-0 win.
