FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over rival George Washington on Wednesday night, avenging a tight 3-2 loss earlier this season.
Chelsea Colter (9) and
Ewelina Gacek (6) set career-highs in blocks to lead a stout Mason defense that limited George Washington to just a .029 hitting percentage. Gacek also added a game-high nine kills to go with four digs.
The Patriots (7-17, 3-9) traded points with the visitors to open set one until a GW service error sparked a 4-0 run for Mason that featured two blocks from the pair of Colter and
Gabriella Gelfound. Mason used kills from four different players down the stretch as it pushed the lead to as many as nine en route to a 25-17 win.
Set two started the same way as the first, with Mason and the Revolutionaries (7-16, 4-8) trading points until a 6-2 run by the Patriots pushed the lead to 11-7. GW would get within three, 17-14, but a 3-0 run from the Patriots sparked by a block from Colter and Gacek forced a timeout by George Washington after it trailed by six. Mason held off any comeback attempts from the visitors as a kill from Gacek closed the door for another 25-17 victory.
The Mason offense shined in set three, converting a match-high 16 kills with just two errors. Highlighted by four kills on five attempts from
Nani Spaar off the bench, Mason slowly stretched their lead throughout the stanza.
Ewelina Gacek powered the defense with three block assists down the stretch as Mason cruised to their fourth sweep of the season.
