FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team fell to the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-1.
Gabriella Gelfound filled the stat sheet, posting a game-high 21 assists, a team-high 12 kills and was just one dig off a triple-double with nine digs. She also tallied a career-high three solo blocks as a part of a game-best five-block afternoon.
Mason and Davidson traded points to open the match, with 10 tie scores up until a 15-15 draw when the Wildcats (14-7, 6-5) went on a 7-1 run to lead by six. Gelfound led the hosts with four kills during the set, including one down the stretch to prolong the set, but several service errors by Mason gave Davidson the 25-21 win.
It was all Davidson from the start of the second set as it jumped out to an 8-2 lead compliments of a 6-0 run. The Wildcats' defense limited the Patriots (6-17, 2-9) to just a .083 hitting clip to hold off a comeback by the hosts as
Grace Kristofic led from the service line to spark a 4-0 run and force a Davidson timeout. However, a Wildcat ace closed the set for a 25-17 win.
The Patriots battled in set three, sparking a game-best offensive output with 15 kills at a .306 clip. The teams were tied 17 times and traded the lead seven as both recorded personal best kill totals for the match. Mason led 19-17 on back-to-back kills from the freshmen duo of
Caroline Rodriguez and
Chelsea Colter, but Davidson surged back with a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead. A
Gracie Halley ace gave Mason back the lead for good and two kills down the stretch gave it a 25-22 win to stretch the match to the fourth set.
With the fourth set tied at 11-all, the Wildcats were able to string together a 5-0 run to pull ahead, led by four kills from Isabel Decker. The Patriots were limited to a game-low .079 clip and Davidson had their best offensive set at a .286 as it cruised to the 3-1 match victory.
