OLEAN, N.Y. – Behind a career-high nine points from freshman
Jada Brown and outstanding team defense, the George Mason women's basketball team battled to their first A-10 conference win of the season.
Brown went 3-6 from the field and drilled two crucial free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining in the game for a career-high nine points. She also pulled down a rebound and notched two steals.
The forward duo of graduate student
Riley Childs and senior
Nalani Kaysia both pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. The tally is a season-best for Childs and the second-straight game that Kaysia notched double-digit boards.
It was all Mason in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 10-8 lead at the media timeout. The Patriots (8-7, 1-1) scored the final seven points to stretch the lead to by nine after the first stanza.
The two teams traded points throughout the second quarter, but Mason capitalized on the turnovers by St. Bonaventure to hold a 28-18 lead at the halftime break.
The Bonnies (3-14, 0-2) came out with strong defense in the third, limiting Mason to just seven points to cut into the lead and trail by just five. St. Bonaventure brought that momentum into the fourth, scoring the first seven points of the quarter to take a 37-35 lead at the 7:11 mark.
Mason battled back as the two teams traded the lead until a layup by Kaysia gave the Patriots the lead with 22 seconds remaining. Childs came up a huge on a defensive rebound on a missed shot from the charity stripe on the defensive end to regain possession and lead to Brown's clutch free throws.
