Fairfax, Va.— The George Mason wrestling team will continue its seven-match road stint in Ohio in a Tri-meet hosted by Cleveland State University with SIUE on Saturday, January 28.
Mason wrestling is ranked No. 18 in the NWCA Mid-Major Wrestling poll released Jan. 13 by the coaches association. The Patriots are one of three teams in the Mid-American Conference to make the Top 20 mid-major poll. Northern Illinois is ranked No. 16 while Clarion comes in at 19. Several conference schools were among others receiving votes.
The Green and Gold (9-3, 1-1) won its first eight matches of the season, its best start since the 1994-95 season before dropping two matches to ACC powerhouses Virginia and No. 8 Virginia Tech and its opening MAC dual to Clarion.
The Patriots are 3-4 all-time against Cleveland State. The Vikings won the previous dual, 22-14, on Dec. 20, 2019.
The Patriots and SIUE have met twice in program history. Mason won the inaugural match 21-15 (Jan. 7, 2017) at a neutral site in Lexington, Va., and defeated the Cougars last's year 30-7 on the Fairfax campus (Jan. 22, 2022). SIUE enters the match with a 3-5 dual meet record.
The Cougars feature three nationally-ranked wrestlers by intermatwrestle.com.
Saul Ervin is 21st at 141 pounds.
Caleb Tyus is No. 18 at 149. Colton McKIernan is 15th at 285 pounds.
The 141-pound class should be very competitive as SIUE's Saul Ervin is ranked second and CSU's Dylan Layton third in the MAC. There are two wrestles in the top five at 157. Mason's
Peter Pappas is ranked fourth and the Vikings Marcus Robinson fifth in January's MAC rankings.
Freshman
Malachi DuVall ranked five in the conference will battle CSU's Deandre Nasser (6th) and SIUE Sergio Villalobos (8
th) at 184 pounds. All three teams have wrestlers ranked in the top eight in the conference at 197 pounds.
