FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team will welcome Davidson to EagleBank Arena on Saturday, looking for their second win over the Wildcats in as many years.
Davidson treks to Fairfax for the 11th meeting in the history of the two programs, with all meetings coming as members of the A-10. Mason won last year's game on the road, 58-50, but Davidson won four-straight prior to that.
Mason most recently dropped a thriller to A-10 leader Rhode Island, 57-53, on Wednesday night. On the other hand, Davidson is riding a four-game win streak after opening conference play with two losses.
PATRIOT POINTS
- On Wednesday, senior Nalani Kaysia posted her third double-double of the season, contributing 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She also went 4-4 from the free throw line, her first time this season going 100% from the charity stripe.
- Kaysia was joined in double-figure scoring by Sonia Smith (13) and Tamia Lawhorne (11). Smith is now averaging double-digit scoring this season (10.1 ppg).
- Sophomore Paula Suárez dished out a career-high six assists, her fourth time this season with five or more.
- As a team, Mason knocked down 14-18 free throws for a .778 efficiency, its' highest this season.
- Mason currently has the fourth-best scoring defense in the A-10, limiting opponents to 61.8 points per game. Rebounding continues to be a bright spot for the Patriots, as they rank second in the conference with 13.4 offensive rebounds and fourth with 39.5 total rebounds per contest
- Taylor Jameson ranks 12th in the A-10 with 13.1 ppg and Nalani Kaysia ranks 11th with 0.8 bpg and 13th with 7.0 rpg. Paula Suarez ranks 18th with 2.9 apg.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Davidson finished non-conference play at 7-7, including a loss to common opponent No. 19 Maryland in mid-November. After opening A-10 play with two losses and two canceled games, the Wildcats have bounced back in a big way, winning their last four games and averaging over 70 points per game in that span.
Elle Sutphin leads the Wildcats on both ends of the court, averaging a team-high 17.4 points (4th, A-10), 7.7 rebounds (9th, A-10) and 1.0 blocks (9th, A-10) per contest. She is one of two players to have started every game and also ranks first on the team with 29 steals and a .509 efficiency from the field.
Suzi-Rose Deegan ranks second on the team with 13.8 points (11th, A-10), 6.7 rebounds (14th, A-10), 2.7 assists and 22 total steals. Issy Morgan ranks first on the team in assisting, dishing out 3.1 per game, good for 13th in the conference, while contributing 7.8 points and 1.1 steals per contest.
