FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team returns to its' home court for a pair of games this week, beginning with the Rams of Rhode Island on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
The Patriots welcome the Rams to EagleBank Arena for the first time since Jan. 27, 2019, which was also the last time Mason was victorious over URI, picking up a 75-69 win over the visitors. The two teams' history dates back to 2014 when the Patriots joined the A-10, and URI holds a slight 5-4 advantage over Mason.
Mason is coming off of a tough road loss to the Spiders of Richmond, while URI is coming off of a 17-point victory over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies to remain undefeated in the Atlantic 10.
PATRIOT POINTS
- After a strong week, senior Nalani Kaysia was named to the A-10 weekly honor roll, averaging 13.5 points and 7.0 rebounds to go along with three assists, two steals and a block.
- Kaysia ranks 13th in the conference with 6.8 boards per game and 14th with 0.8 blocks per game this season.
- Taylor Jameson knocked down 16 points in back-to-back games last week, and the junior now ranks 12th in the A-10 with 13.4 points per contest.
- Another individual bright spot for the Patriots has been Paula Suarez, who is averaging 10 points, 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game over the last five contests. She is also shooting .750 from three-point range and has set multiple career-highs.
- Despite the loss to Richmond, Mason committed just seven team turnovers, its' lowest total this season and the first time since Jan. 19, 2022 that the Patriots committed single-digit turnovers- also against Richmond.
- Mason currently has the fifth-best scoring defense in the A-10, limiting opponents to 62.0 points per game.
- Rebounding also continues to be a bright spot for the Patriots, as the rank second in the conference with 13.3 offensive rebounds and fourth with 39.8 total rebounds per contest.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
Rhode Island wrapped non-conference play at 11-3, including a win streak of nine games stretching from Nov. 11 to Dec. 11. Since a loss to Princeton on Dec. 28, the Rams have torn through the A-10 and remain the only undefeated team in the league. Their closest games were seven-point victories over Duquesne and reigning champ UMass.
The Rams are led on both sides of the court by Mayé Touré who is averaging a team-best 14.1 points (10th, A-10) and 8.0 rebounds (7th, A-10) per game. She has also registered a team-high 16 blocks and is the Rams' best free throw shooter, knocking down 43 of 55 attempts so far this season.
Sayawni Lassiter has dished out a team-high 94 assists (2nd, A-10) so far this season, averaging 4.9 per game (3rd, A-10) while contributing 2.0 steals (7th, A-10) and 7.8 points per game. Madison Hattix-Covington is second on the team in scoring with 9.9 points per game in a team-high 26.8 minutes while grabbing 5.2 rebounds per game.
