RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a strong third quarter push, the George Mason women's basketball team fell to host Richmond, 73-58.
The Patriots (10-10, 3-4) were led by 16 points from junior
Taylor Jameson, who also contributed four rebounds, a block, an assist and a steal.
Sophomore Paula Suarez had a comprehensive night, contributing nine points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 35 minutes of work.
The Spiders (12-6, 2-3) were able to score the first two baskets of the game and never trailed, holding Mason to just 31.7% from the field. Senior
Sonia Smith knocked down a jump shot to pull within four at the media timeout, but an 8-0 run to close the first left Mason in a 20-8 deficit after the first quarter.
Richmond's hot shooting continued in the second quarter, converting eight of their 11 chances, including four from three-point range to stretch their lead to 21 at the halftime break.
Mason came back roaring in the third quarter, led by 11 points from Jameson on 4-4 shooing. However, some fouling trouble allowed the Spiders to hold onto their lead, knocking down 11 free throws in the third. The Patriots were able to cut into the lead and trailed 61-47 with one period to go.
It was a defensive battle in the fourth, as the two teams combined for just four made baskets. Mason was able to generate some offense, but converted just one of 13 chances as they could not get closer than 14 to provide the final tally.
PATRIOT POINTS
- Three Patriots scored in double-digits, as Jameson (16) and Smith (13) were joined by senior Nalani Kaysia who also chipped in 13.
- Kaysia knocked down a career-high nine free throws throughout the evening, as well as five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
- Freshman Nekhu Mitchell registered a team-high six rebounds off the bench.
- As a team, Mason committed just seven turnovers, the first time this season their turnover total was in single-digits.
- The Patriots force 18 Richmond turnovers and held a +7 advantage (13-6) in points of off turnovers.
