MVB host East/West Challenge this Weekend

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Men's Volleyball Team hosts the East/West Coast Challenge this weekend from Jan. 19-21 in the RAC. It will feature three games.

The Patriots will try to change the tides falling to 0-2 after the first weekend. They fell to Grand Canyon 3-0 and 3-1 to Ohio State. Even after dropping the first two sets against the Buckeyes, the Patriots roared back to take the third set 27-25 and pushed Ohio State to the brink in the fourth 26-24.
 
Heading into this weekend, Omar Hoyos leads the team in kills with 23 averaging 3.29 per set followed by Jack Bolz (18,2.57). In the assist category, freshman Georgi Zahariev leads with 47 assists averaging 6.71 per set and Troy McDonald with seven. On the defensive side, Hoyos and Zahariev have tallied (10) and (8) digs respectively.
 
Scouting Long Island (2-1)
 
The Sharks are led by head coach Kai Dugquem. They have defeated Belmont Abbey and Queens (NC) while dropping a game against Limestone. Gustavo Calvani leads the team in kills with 41 (3.73 per set), followed by Luke Chandler (36, 3.27). Luca Holanda is the primary setter with 113 assists (10.27 per set). Danny Seligar and Luke Chandler have recorded 24 and 20 digs on the season.
 
This is our first contest against LIU.
 
Scouting Long Beach State (2-0)
 
The Beach are a historic volleyball program headed by longtime coach Alan Knipe. He has led them to two championships including finishing as the runner-up last season. They have defeated King University (Tenn.) and Lindenwood.
 
Spencer Olivier and Sotiris Siapanis lead the team in kills with (16/2.67) and (15/2.50). Their primary setter is Aidan Knipe with 55 assists (9.17). Mason Briggs (19.3.17) and Aidan Knipe (9/1.50) lead the Beach in digs.
 
 LBSU leads the all-time series with a 6-1 record against the Patriots.
