SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- The George Mason women's volleyball team fell twice on Saturday to Iona and Akron in tough back-to-back four-set losses.
The Patriots were plagued by hitting errors throughout the day, committing over 30 in both matches to be limited to a .076 clip versus Iona and a .103 percentage versus Akron.
Mason was led by the duo of sophomore
Olyvia Kennedy and junior
Katelyn Clarke on the offense today, as Kennedy put down 15 kills in game one and Clarke notched 15 in game two.
Defensively, freshman
Rachel Larsen stepped into the libero role on Saturday, pacing the defense with 29 digs and nine assists.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: IONA
- Set one featured eight tie scores and five lead changes in a back-and-forth battle. Iona pulled ahead for the win with an 11-2 run.
- Kennedy led eight Patriots with kills, tallying a match-high 15
- The Gaels outblocked the Patriots, 13-7.
- With set four tied at 16, George Mason looked to force a set five, but Iona finished the set on a 9-3 run to close out the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: AKRON
- Clarke led the Patriots in match two, tallying a match-high 15 kills, seven digs and a service ace.
- Senior Yanira Lopez-Barahona notched a season-high nine kills to go along with a perfect reception percentage with 20.
- The entire match was back-and-forth, featuring 14 tie scores and eight lead changes.
- Set three was a thriller, as the set went into extra points, but the Zips pulled out a 27-25 win.
- Graduate student Peyton Ehmke clocked eight kills at a .222 clip to go along with four total blocks.
George Mason will return to the court next Friday in a neutral site match against Radford. Open serve is set for 1 p.m.
