FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team hosts Penn State in the home opener on Monday, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.

Last time out, the Patriots (0-2-0) fell to American, 2-1, on Friday at Reeves Field in Washington, D.C.

Mason sophomore defender Ahmed Mohamed scored his first collegiate goal in the ninth minute of play to give the Patriots the early lead.  Graduate student forward Ariel Aguas picked up his first assist as a Patriot on the play.  Senior goalkeeper Jake Langley (0-2-0) made three saves in the match.

Mason and then No. 11 Penn State met last season, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa.  With inclement weather in the area, the match was delayed with 5:06 remaining in regulation.  The game was called final after a mutual decision by the coaching staff of both teams to not resume the game due to lightning.

Penn State scored the first goal of the match in the 38th minute.  Mason midfielder Louis Lehr scored with a header to notch his first collegiate goal in the 67th minute in his Patriots debut.  Forward Balint Kocso and Lehr each recorded two shots on goal in the match.

The Nittany Lions outshot the Patriots 16-11, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.  Penn State finished with seven corner kicks, while Mason had two corner kicks in the match.

The Patriots have an all-time record of 3-1-1 against the Nittany Lions.  Mason is 3-0-0 all-time against Penn State in games played at George Mason Stadium.  The Patriots have wins over the Nittany Lions by scores of 2-1 (Oct. 4, 1987), 4-1 (Sept. 9, 1992) and 1-0 in overtime (Sept. 24, 2005) in Fairfax.

Mason head coach Rich Costanzo played at Penn State (2004-2005), where he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Freshman All-American by Soccer American and TopDrawerSoccer in 2004.

This season, the Patriots are scheduled to play 15 regular season games, a slate that includes two matches against NCAA Tournament teams.  Mason will play seven home games, three against non-conference opponents and four against Atlantic 10 rivals.
