Patriots Fall to Top-Ranked Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – George Mason freshman midfielder Zach Eichelberger scored his first collegiate goal, but the Patriots fell to No. 1 Wake Forest, 6-1, on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Mason (2-4-0, 1-0-0 A-10) fell behind Wake Forest (8-0-0, 2-0-0 ACC) in the 27th minute of play when sophomore midfielder Leo Guarino scored his second goal of the season to put the Demon Deacons in front, 1-0.

The two teams then traded goals in the final five minutes of the first half.

In the 42nd minute, Eichelberger scored the equalizer, finding the back of the net with a right foot to make it a 1-1 game.

Just over three minutes later Wake Forest junior defender Garrison Tubbs tallied his first goal of the season to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead at the break.

Wake Forest, the top-ranked team in the nation, took command with three goals in the first nine minutes of play in the second half.

Junior midfielder Oscar Sears scored his second goal of the year in the 51st minute to extend the lead to 3-1.

Minutes later, junior midfielder Chase Oliver recorded his first goal of the campaign in the 57th minute and junior defender Jahlane Forbes followed with his first goal of the season in the 60th minute to pad the advantage to 5-1.

Forbes finished the game with one goal and two assists, while Sears and Oliver each recorded one goal and an assist in the match.

Senior midfielder David Wrona scored the last goal of the match in the 72nd minute for the 6-1 final score.

Six different players scored a goal for Wake Forest and eight players registered at least one assist.

Mason senior goalkeeper Jake Langley (2-4-0, 1-0-0 A-10) made five saves, while Wake Forest sophomore goalkeeper Trace Alphin did not record a save in the match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Demon Deacons outshot the Patriots, 21-1, including an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal.  Wake Forest finished with eight corner kicks, while Mason did not have a corner kick in the match.

Eichelberger recorded the Patriots lone shot of the game in 16 minutes of action. 

For Wake Forest, 15 players recorded at least one shot, while eight players had at least one shot on goal for the Demon Deacons in the match.

The Patriots return to Atlantic 10 play when they travel to Davidson on Saturday, Sept. 24 with the opening kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alumni Soccer Stadium in Davidson, N.C.
