Patriots Surrender Late Goals, Fall to American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Mason sophomore defender Ahmed Mohamed scored his first collegiate goal, but the Patriots fell to American, 2-1, on Friday at Reeves Field in Washington, D.C.

Mason (0-2-0) scored off a set piece to take the lead over American (2-0-1) early in the first half.

Junior midfielder Louis Lehr sent a corner kick into the box, where graduate student midfielder Ariel Aguas played the ball to Mohamed, who scored into the lower right corner to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.

Aguas recorded his first assist in a Mason uniform.

American erased the Mason lead with a pair of goals in a span of 13 minutes late in the second half.

In the 74th minute, Eagles sophomore forward Zemi Rodriguez scored the equalizer into the lower left corner to make it a 1-1 game.

In the 87th minute, junior forward Robbie Matei netted the game winner, his second goal of the season, into the upper right corner.

Mason senior goalkeeper Jake Langley (0-2-0) made three saves, while American junior goalkeeper Lorenzo Gordon made two saves in the match.

HOW THEY SCORED

9' | Mohamed scored into the lower right corner from six yards out.
74' | Rodriguez scored the equalizer into the lower left corner.
87' | Matei netted the game-winner into the upper right corner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Patriots outshot the Eagles, 7-5, while the Eagles had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.  Mason finished with three corner kicks and American had one corner kick in the match.

Sophomore defender Joshua Morrobel led all players with three shots in the match.  Aguas, Mohamed and Morrobel each recorded one shot on goal.

Freshman defender Will Carson, senior defender Jonathan Fawole, freshman midfielder Nicholas Prioli, along with Aguas and Mohamed each played 90 minutes in the match.

Eight cards were handed out in the match, five to the Patriots and three to the Eagles.

NEXT FOR MASON

The Patriots host Penn State in the home opener on Monday, Sept. 5 with the opening kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va.
