FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason junior midfielder
Henry Wachsman scored his first collegiate goal late in the second half to lift the Patriots over St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in the Atlantic 10 opener on Saturday night at George Mason Stadium.
The victory snapped an 18-game winless streak for Patriots against conference opponents. The win was Mason's first against an Atlantic 10 foe since Oct. 12, 2019, when the Patriots defeated Davidson in double overtime, 2-1.
Mason (2-3-0) took the lead over St. Bonaventure (2-4-1) in the 33rd minute of play.
Junior midfielder
Balint Kocso scored his first goal of the season from just inside the six-yard box, beating the Bonnies goalkeeper low to the left side, to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
Junior forward
Ishmail Kamara registered his first assist of the season, while freshman midfielder
Nicholas Prioli notched his first collegiate assist on the play.
The Bonnies scored the equalizer late in the second half on a set piece.
In the 78th minute, the Bonnies were given a free kick from just outside the penalty area in front of the Mason goal. Sophomore forward Matthew Wrobel scored the equalizer for his team-leading fourth goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game.
Mason went back on the offensive attack and answered just 24 seconds later, with a pair of firsts on the play.
Freshman midfielder
Zach Eichelberger maneuvered past defenders to set up the goal for his first NCAA assist, and Wachsman ripped a shot into the upper right side of the net for the eventual game-winner for his first NCAA goal to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
Mason senior goalkeeper
Jake Langley (2-3-0) made two saves, while St. Bonaventure freshman goalkeeper Nicolas Pucci also made two saves in the match.
