The Battle of the Georges remained deadlocked throughout the first half of play, with some shots just glancing the goal frame from both teams. It was not until three minutes into the second half that George Washington would take the lead with a goal by defender Margaret Rabbitt. After a scramble for the ball inside the penalty box from a Colonial corner kick, Rabbitt chipped the ball from 14 yards out and landed in the goal, just slipping by the fingertips of goalkeeper
Selamawit Caldart and the bottom of the crossbar.
The Patriots would level the score 12 minutes later by way of a
Sophie Davidson goal. With the help of
Milan Pierre-Jerome's nifty side-footed flick to
Mia Casciani in the midfield, followed by Casciani's perfectly placed through ball aimed for the edge of the penalty box, freshman forward Davidson took one light touch to get the ball past the rushing goalkeeper. The goalkeeper collided with the defender that was chasing
Sophie Davidson, leaving the freshman forward alone with the ball inside the six yard box. She tapped in the equalizer and recorded her first career collegiate goal. For the rest of the match, the Patriots kept the pressure on the Colonials defense, creating more opportunities for themselves in the attacking third and shutting down potential counterattacks.
After the game, coach
Manya Puppione reflected on what she saw on the field from the Green and Gold.
"This RevRivalry lived up to its expectations," said coach Puppione, "Credit to GW for giving us a competitive game. I am proud of how we showed up for our first conference game."
When asked about the quality of play she saw from her squad this afternoon, she was very impressed and excited to see the Patriots back on the field next week.
"It was the best soccer I've seen from them. We created some dangerous chances and we got on board with a quality goal. Our team will continue to improve and I'm looking forward to seeing what we bring next Thursday at home."
