FAIRFAX, Va.- The George Mason University women's volleyball team will head north this weekend when it travels to South Orange, N.J. for the Seton Hall Invitational beginning on Friday night.
The Patriots will first take on host Seton Hall on Friday night at 7 p.m. George Mason will then play the Iona Gaels at 10 a.m. the next morning, and then wrap up competition with the Akron Zips at 4:30 p.m.
PATRIOT POINTS
- The Patriots are 1-2 so far this season.
- Sophomore Olyvia Kennedy currently leads the patriots in kills with 38, averaging over 3.00 per set.
- Senior Mujay Mambu is coming off a career game, putting down 19 kills to bring her total to 30 on the year. Sophomore Camille Larkin is also ccontributing to the offense, hitting at a team high .469 for 18 kills.
- Freshman Gabriella Gelfound had a stellar debut this past weekend, racking up 60 assists, 26 kills and eight total blocks.
- Graduate student Peyton Ehmke currently leads the team in blocks with 13.0.
- Senior Stephanie Der leads the Green & Gold defense, averaging just under five digs per set as a libero.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Seton Hall is currently 2-1 after competing in the Temple Invitational last weekend and hosting Hofstra in a midweek tilt. The Pirates are led offensively by Jenna Walsh and Perri Lucas, who have registered 40 and 33 kills, respectively. The first and only other match-up between the Patriots and the Pirates was three years ago, and the Pirates were victorious in a four-set win.
Iona opened its season with three-straight wins at their own 2022 Iona Gaels Volleyball tournament last weekend. Greta Stjade currently leads the team with 35 kills, while Jen Soto also leads at the net with 13.0 blocks. The Patriots will be lining up against the Gaels for the first time in 17 years.
Akron is currently 0-3, but its last two losses have been close 2-3 defeats to Oakland and Butler. Teagan Ochaya is currently the team leader in kills, averaging 12 per match. The game will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
