TOWSON, Md. – The George Mason University women's soccer team fell short against Towson Thursday evening at Tiger Field, 2-1.
The Tigers' aggressive offense to start the game led to a fourth minute goal by Towson junior Nia Christopher, assisted by midfielder Phoebe Canoles. In the fifteenth minute, Canoles would score a goal of her own off a breakaway down the right side, assisted by Jasmine Hamid as Towson took a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots responded two minutes later with a goal by senior defender Kolbrun Eyjolfsdottir. A free kick was sent into the Towson box by junior midfielder Milan Pierre-Jerome, where Eyjolfsdottir headed the ball over the hands of the Towson goalkeeper.
With their leadership and playing style on the field, both Pierre-Jerome and Eyjolfsdottir were able to calm the Patriot squad, maintaining composure and steady possession in the midfield and defense throughout the game.
Towson would threaten a few more times in the second half, rattling the Patriot crossbar and posts. Freshman goalkeeper Selamawit Caldart made key saves down the stretch to keep the Patriots in the game with a one goal difference. In the last few minutes of the game, a final corner kick attempt by the Patriots came up empty, as a scramble for the ball outside the box set up a one-timer for freshman defender Christin Grant, whose shot went over the crossbar.
