TOWSON, Md. – The George Mason University women's soccer team (1-1-2) will go on the road this week, as they will play against Towson (2-1-1) on Thursday, September 1.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tiger Field. The game will be broadcast on FloSports and can also be followed on Live Stats.
LAST TIME OUT
The Patriots are coming off a successful homestand, where they earned their first victory of the season soundly defeating Howard 3-1 on Thursday night and battling Appalachian State to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon. It was the first two-game homestand to start the season.
Thursday night's game featured three separate freshman goal scorers that included Rachel Eberly, Brooke Volpi and Zoe Vidaurre. Sunday afternoon's game gave rookie goalkeeper Selamawit Caldart the first shutout of her college career.
The defense played a key role in both games, blocking shots and shutting down offensive pushes from the opposing team all game. Defenders Kolbrun Eyjólfsdóttir, Serena Spitz, Tessa Niedzwiedzki and Zoe Vidaurre started both games and contributed valuable minutes.
SCOUTING TOWSON
The Tigers drew to George Washington 0-0 last Thursday night in Washington and won against Mount St. Mary's 2-0 the following Sunday evening at Towson, with goals scored by junior forward Nia Christopher and sophomore midfielder Danielle Campbell. Their evening match up with the Patriots will be the second of a four-game homestand.
Towson finished their 2021 season with an 8-7-3 overall record and a 3-5-1 record in the Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA). It was their first winning season since 2007. Nia Christopher was awarded All-CAA First Team honors for her then-sophomore campaign, which included a team-leading 13 goals. Other returners Jasmine Hamid was awarded All-CAA Second Team honors, and Phoebe Canoles & Riley Melendez were given All-CAA Third Team honors.
HISTORY WITH THE TIGERS
Mason dominates the head-to-head series against Towson with a 13-1-0 record. The Patriots have won the last 12 match-ups dating back to October 28, 2004. In that span, the Patriots have outscored the Tigers 28-6. The last time these two teams met was on September 15, 2019, when Mason won 1-0 at home.
