FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw in Sunday afternoon's home game against Appalachian State.
The Mountaineers threatened early with a shot on goal in the fourth minute by Haley Boyles, but freshman goalkeeper
Selamawit Caldart caught the ball aimed for the middle of the goal. Caldart would go on to record three saves in total for the afternoon.
Mason's
Ashley Shimberg had the best chance of breaking the tie in the eighth minute, where her shot outside the box was pushed just over the crossbar by Mountaineer goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston.
Defense played a major role for both teams, as they both shut down the majority of each teams' offensive possessions and blocked shots with their bodies.
Two yellow cards were shown during the game. The first yellow card was given to App State's Shannon Studer after a hard foul in the 14
th minute, and the second yellow was given to Mason's
Serena Spitz in the 44
th minute for a hard foul as well.
