WASHINGTON, D.C.- The George Mason women's volleyball team split their away-home doubleheader on Saturday, falling to American on the road and earning an exciting victory over New Orleans at the RAC.
Against American, George Mason was unable to string together consistent offense, ultimately being swept by the Eagles.
The Patriots bounced back, however, showing resiliency against New Orleans. After the Privateers took a 2-1 set lead, George Mason was able to surge back and secure their first win of the season. The win marked the first for head coach
Megan Shifflett Bachmann, who made her coaching debut in the RAC tonight in front of a packed house.
Senior
Mujay Mambu, who missed last season due to injury, shined for the Patriots, putting down a career-high 19 kills throughout the match, including the match winner. The outside hitter also contributed defensively, registering three block assists.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: AMERICAN
- Sophomore Olyvia Kennedy led the Patriots for the second-straight game, posting a season high 16 kills at an efficient .394 clip.
- Damiana Bova-Ford and Gabriella Gelfound both paced the Green & Gold offense with 18 assists a piece
- Gelfound also contributed seven kills and two service aces throughout the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: NEW ORLEANS
- The Patriots shined at the net, averaging a .290 hitting percentage across five sets. The team also totaled 12 team blocks, including four in the fifth set.
- Along with Mambu, freshman Gabriella Gelfound and sophomore Olyvia Kennedy also registered double-digit kills, putting down 13 a piece.
- Graduate student Peyton Ehmke hit at an efficient .438 for nine kills to go along with two block assists and a season high six block assists.
- Gelfound and sophomore Damiana Bova-Ford both registered career-highs in assists, posting 27 and 28, respectively.
- Gelfound also registered her first career triple-double, tallying 13 kills, 27 assists and 11 digs to go along with five block assists.
