LAST TIME OUT
The Patriots hope to continue their scoring ways after a strong showing in their home opener against Howard, where the Green and Gold won 3-1. It was the first season home opener victory for Mason since 2018.
The goals were scored by
Rachel Eberly (33'),
Brooke Volpi (36') and Zoe Vidaurre (46'). All three goals were scored by freshmen who tallied the first points of their Patriot careers. Mason's defense also played a key role in Thursday night's game, as they were able to smother and shut down any Howard advances for the majority of the night.
SCOUTING APPALACHIAN STATE
The Mountaineers are entering into Sunday's game in Fairfax with a win as well, beating UT Martin 2-1. After starting the season with back-to-back scoreless draws, sophomore forward Anna Kate Highsmith scored the team's first goal of the season in the 19th minute, followed by junior forward Izzi Wood in the 27th minute. The Mountaineers would concede one goal in the second half but were able to hold on for their season's first win.
Appalachian State finished its 2021 season with an overall record of 7-11-1, with a 2-8 record in the Sun Belt Conference. They return their leading scorer and points leader of that season, junior forward Breckyn Monteith, where her 10 goals and 20 points were good for 4th and 6th highest in the Sun Belt, respectively.
HISTORY WITH THE MOUNTAINEERS
Mason leads the overall series 2-0. The first meeting was on Sept. 14, 2014 in Boone, N.C., where the Patriots won 2-0. Mason would also win the following year at home, 1-0.
