Game Recap: Women's Soccer |
Charlottesville, Va. – In the season-opener for both teams, #4 Virginia defeated George Mason women's soccer, 3-1, at Klockner Stadium tonight in Charlottesville.

Virginia controlled possession for most of the match, tallying three goals on 37 total shots (13 on goal). The Patriots were limited to just two shots but found the back of the net on the second attempt, breaking a seven-game scoreless streak against the Cavaliers dating back to Sept. 22, 2000.

Freshman Josie Stockett scored the Patriots lone goal in her collegiate debut to cut the Cavalier lead to 2-1 in the 72' minute. The Patriots Sophie Davidson hit the crossbar off a free kick from 30 yards out and Stockett knocked in the carom.

Cavalier four-time All-ACC honoree Alexa Spaanstra earned the first goal of the match at the 37' mark. The Patriots were down 1-0 at the intermission. Mason's tenacious defensive effort led by redshirt senior Kolbrun Eyjofsdottir and freshman goalkeeper Selamawit Caldart kept the Patriots within striking distance of UVA. The Cavaliers took 17 shots (seven on goal) with eight corners in the first 45 minutes of the match. Caldart had six saves in the half.

Virginia got its final goal with four minutes remaining in the match for the final two-goal margin.
