Box Score TEANECK, N.J. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (13-11, 7-6 EIVA) swept Fairleigh Dickinson (in three sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-23) on Friday night inside the Rothman Center.
In typical fashion, the Patriots started their match in a back-and-forth fashion like their previous few matches. After the 2-2-point mark, the Patriots soared ahead in the set, with the Knights only getting as close by two points in the set. After forcing several attack errors, Mason won the first set 25-16.
In similar fashion to the first set, Mason was able to soar ahead with the lead from the Knights. The Patriots earned the first point in the set and eventually won the second game 25-17.
Fairleigh Dickinson came out strong in the third set, taking a significant lead, forcing the Patriots to take a timeout at the 8-11-point mark. The Knights slowly crept ahead, but the Patriots were able to tie the game at 14-14 and several times there after that. After tying the game at 23-23, Mason took the last two points of the set to win 25-23 and take the 3-0 win in the match.
"I liked the execution a lot tonight from our team," said Head Coach
Jay Hosack. "We missed a good number of served but we followed them up mostly with side outs, so that is ok with me."
The Patriots clinched their berth in the EIVA Conference tournament with a win against Fairleigh Dickson and a No.2 Penn State win against St. Francis Brooklyn.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Redshirt sophomore Jack Bolz led the offensive momentum for the Patriots, tallying match highs and team highs in kills (14).
- Senior Richie Hoff also tallied double digit kills, recording 10 in the match.
- Hoff led the team in hitting percentage, recording a 0.500 mark (10 kills on 18 attempts with one error).
- Sophomore Sam Peters and freshman Lucas Little also led the team in hitting percentage recording a 0.750 mark (six kills on eight attempts) and 0.500 (four kills on six attempts with one error), respectively.
- Bolz also led the team on the defensive end, tallying a team high in digs (8).
- Freshman Troy McDonald led the team and match in assists, recording 36 in the match.
- Little led the match in blocks, tallying five in the match.
- The Patriots went a perfect 47-for-47 in receptions.
- Mason outhit Fairleigh Dickinson, 37.3 percent to the Knight' 9.0 percent.
- Mason tallied 42 kills and Fairleigh Dickinson tallied 28 kills in the match.
- Mason recorded three service aces while Fairleigh Dickinson tallied none.
