Patriots Travel to Philadelphia for 126th Penn Relays

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason track and field program travels to Philadelphia for the 126th running of the Penn Relays, beginning Thursday at historic Franklin Field.
 
The Penn Relays will be broadcast nationally on FloTrack ($), and will run Thursday through Saturday. The past two years of the Penn Relays have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 
 
Competing on Thursday will be Jack Ikenberry in the 5000m, Jessica McRae, Sid Yap, Garsen Gross and Bobby Kestyn in the hammer throw and James Seal in the 1500m.
 
Friday's slate is highlighted by relay and field events for the Patriots. Mason will compete in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and sprint medley relays. 
 
Representing the field events on Friday will be Kelsey Sebwe in the triple jump, Hannah Robertson and Autumn White in the pole vault, Lindsey Schmidt and Cason Gardner in the high jump, and Jaylen Simmons and Connor Steggerda in the discus. 
 
Simmons (Shot Put) and Grace Furlong (Triple Jump) will wrap up the Penn Relays for the Patriots on Saturday. Both events are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Last time out, Mason totaled six first-place finishes at the Navy Spring Invitational (April 16). 
 
Freshman Abby Weening posted a PR of 4,661 points in the heptathlon. She PR'ed in six of the seven events: 100m hurdles (14.73), high jump (1.52m), shot put (9.96m), 200 (26.39), javelin (28.76m) and 800m (2:30.22). Her point total ranks fourth in the A-10, and are the most by a freshman this season.
 
Sophomore Isaiah Carter also put together a solid showing on the track for the Patriots. He ran the second-fastest 200m dash in the A-10 this season, posting a time of 21.26 seconds. He was a member of the winning 4x400 relay and added a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay. 
 
Sophomore Michka-Mae Hyde ran a four-second PR in the 400m hurdles, finishing in a time of 1:00.63.
 
In the NCAA East Region, McRae currently sits 39th in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.91 meters. Simmons ranks 31st in the shot put (17.91m) and 48th in the discus (53.22). The top-48 student-athletes in each event qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round, scheduled for May 25-28 in Bloomington, Ind. 
 
Up next, Mason gears up for the 2022 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 7-8, hosted by VCU in Richmond, Va.
