Patriots Earn Fourth Straight Conference Win

CHARLESTON, WVa. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (12-11, 7-6 EIVA) earned a victory in a thrilling five sets (18-25, 25-10, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11) against Charleston (5-13, 2-10 EIVA) on Saturday night inside the Wehrle Innovation Center.
 
Charleston (WVa.) started the match off strong, trying to avenge their 3-1 loss the night prior. The Patriots were able to come back to tie the score once during the set before the Golden Eagles pulled away to take the 25-18 win in the first game.

Mason came out in dominating fashion in the second set. While the Golden Eagles started off with the slight advantage and the game being tied at three different times, Mason took the lead and ran with it to earn the 25-10 win in the second game.
 
Tied at one set a piece, the Patriots kicked it in high gear. Mason's offensive momentum was enough to hold off the Golden Eagles as the Patriots held the lead the entirety of the third game. The Green & Gold came away with the 25-19 win in the third set.
 
Looking to close it out in four, the Patriots had the advantage. Charleston stormed back to tie the game and eventually take the lead from the Patriots to win the fourth game 25-22.
 
Mason headed into the fifth game with a winning mindset, taking playing hard to take the lead early. Despite Charleston's efforts to tie the game or take the lead, the offensive and defensive efforts from the Patriots was enough to take the fifth set win 15-11 and the 3-2 win in the game.
 
" When you play a team that is only playing for pride, that can be a dangerous team to face," said Head Coach Jay Hosack. "I thought our guys played with a ton of heart tonight and they showed the level of compete that we are capable of. I am proud of their determination to continue to get better."
 
This 2022 team is now fifth all time in Mason history for five set games after playing their eighth five-set game against Charleston (WVa.) on Apr. 2nd. The Patriots now hold a 5-3 record in five-set matches this season.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Redshirt sophomore Jack Bolz led the offensive momentum for the Patriots, tallying match highs and team highs in kills (17).
  • Senior Richie Hoff also tallied double digit kills, recording 16 in the match.
  • Hoff led the team in hitting percentage, recording a 0.652 mark (16 kills on 23 attempts with one error).
  • Sophomore Omar Hoyos was the third Patriot to tally double digit kills, scoring 11 in five sets.
  • Freshman Troy McDonald led the team on the defensive end, tallying a team high and match high in digs (10).
  • McDonald also led the team and match in assists, recording 43 in the match.
  • Sophomore Sam Peters and McDonald led the match in blocks, tallying eight each, with one of McDonald's blocks being a solo block.
  • Mason outhit Charleston (WVa), 33.3 percent to the Golden Eagles' 13.0 percent.
  • Both Mason tallied 55 kills and Charleston (WVa.) tallied 44 kills in the match.
  • Mason recorded six service aces while Charleston (WVa) tallied seven.

Mason will complete their last road trip of the regular season on Apr. 8-9 with stops at Fairleigh Dickinson and Princeton.
