FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (13-14, 7-9 EIVA) fell in three sets (19-25, 29-31, 21-25) to Harvard (12-12, 10-6 EIVA) on Saturday afternoon inside The RAC.
After honoring seniors
Trevor Kennan and
Richie Hoff, Mason took the floor with a different lineup than usual. Usually in the libero spot, Kennan took position as an outside hitter and sophomore
Omar Hoyos filled in the libero spot.
Harvard came out strong in the first set, taking the 4-0 advantage before the Patriots scored their first point off a kill from
Jack Bolz. Mason would come within one point only twice during the set before the Crimson took the win in the first set, 19-25.
Despite the unusual lineup from Mason, the Patriots came out with a fighting spirit, keeping up with the pace of the Crimson. Mason clawed their way back from the deficit to tie the game at 19-19 before continuing to go point for point down the stretch. After extra match points, Harvard took the win in the second set 31-29.
Mason threw out a third different lineup for the third set of the game and was able to go almost point to point with Harvard through the media timeout. The Crimson took the timeout to regroup to take the lead in the game to win the set 21-25.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Senior Richie Hoff led the offensive momentum for the Patriots, tallying a match highs and team highs in kills (13).
- Hoff went on to hit 13-21 in the match for a 0.619 hitting percentage.
- Senior Trevor Kennan hit a career high eight kills in the loss to Harvard along with a career high 23 attacks.
- Freshman Brandon Leary hit his first career kill and assist in the match.
- Sophomore Sam Peters recorded a career high three digs.
- Graduate student Brady Rosen had a career high performance, tallying six kills on 15 attacks on 0.333 hitting percentage.
- Sophomore Colin Heath led the team on the defensive end, tallying a team high in digs (10).
- Redshirt junior Zach Talamoa led the team in assists, recording 16 in the match.
- In receptions, Heath went a perfect 24-for-24.
- Harvard outhit Mason, 42.2 percent to the Patriots' 33.0 percent.
- Mason tallied 43 kills and Harvard tallied 47 kills in the match.
- Mason did not record a service ace while Harvard tallied three.

Mason will travel to State College, Pa. for the EIVA Conference Championship tournament. The Patriots have clinched the #6 seed in the tournament and will face #3 NJIT on Wednesday April 20
th at 4:30 p.m.
