FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (7-7, 2-5 EIVA) travels to the West Coast to play three non-conference matches in California. The Patriots face off against No. 6 Southern California (13-3, 3-1 MPSF) on Wednesday Mar. 9. The match is set for 10 p.m. ET inside the Galen Center.
LAST TIME OUT
Mason is coming off a weekend sweep after winning their first two conference matches at Sacred Heart. The Green & Gold defeated the Pioneers in four sets (24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23) on Friday and in a gutsy five set match (26-24, 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-11) on Saturday.
Redshirt sophomore
Jack Bolz led the Patriots on both the offensive end, earning himself EIVA Offensive Player of the Week honors. The opposite recorded 42 kills and one service ace over the weekend. Bolz tied his career high in kills (21) in each of these matches. The opposite ranks third in the conference in kills per set and second in kills and 16
th nationally in attacks per set.
Freshman
Lucas Little led the team on the defensive end, earning himself EIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors. The middle block tallied a match high and team high 11 blocks in the first win against SHU, setting a new career high. Little currently leads the team in blocks with 51 in 41 sets played, ranks second in the conference in blocks per set, and ranks sixth nationally in blocks per set.
Sophomore
Omar Hoyos had a quiet weekend compared to the past few weeks, but still aided in the offensive and defensive efforts for the Patriots. Over the weekend, the outside hitter recorded 29 kills, three service aces, two assists, 16 digs, and four blocks in nine sets played. Hoyos ranks top five in five statistical categories in the conference and top 25 nationally in service aces per set and hitting percentage.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
NO. 6 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (13-3, 3-1 MPSF)
The Trojans are coming off a weekend sweep against Brigham Young. The first match against the two teams was a closely contested four set match (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20). The second match was won in a clean three set sweep (25-18, 25-10, 25-17).
The Trojans are led offensively by redshirt sophomore Simon Gallas. The opposite/outside hitter leads the team with 250 total kills in 59 sets played. He has also tallied five assists and 22 service aces in his 2022 campaign. Middle block Lucas Frassrand led the offensive momentum for the Trojans over the weekend earning himself MPSF Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Redshirt senior Chris Hall leads the Trojan on the defensive end. The setter has recorded 109 digs in 60 sets played. He has also tallied 26 blocks during the 2022 season. Hall's efforts over the weekend help him earn MPSF Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Trojans hold the advantage over the Patriots, leading the all-time series 8-1, with the last meeting between the two teams came in 2020, where Mason swept Southern California 3-0 at The RAC.
