Mason Completes Perfect Weekend with a Gutsy Five Set Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (7-7, 2-5 EIVA) gutted out a victory in five sets (26-24, 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-11) against Sacred Heart (5-8, 1-6 EIVA) on Saturday night inside the William H Pitt Center.
 
The Pioneers came out strong, ready to avenge the loss from Friday nights match. Mason was able to hold out strong to pull out the win in the first set. Sacred Heart started off hot again in the second set, but the Patriots were unable to close the gap, earning the Pioneers a win in set two.
 
The third set of action started off in a similar manner as the second, but the Patriots were able to take the lead for a bit. A strong defensive effort by the Pioneers led them to a win in the third set before Mason stormed back to take the win in set four, forcing a decisive fifth set.
 
After winning the fourth set, the Patriots came out strong to take the lead by a wide margin in the fifth. The Pioneers were able to catch up to the Patriots, but it was not enough as Mason pulled out the match win in a gutsy battle.
 
" It wasn't always pretty, but our boys got the job done when we needed to," said Head Coach Jay Hosack. . It's good momentum carrying us into next week, but it's not going to be easy out west."
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Redshirt sophomore Jack Bolz led the offensive momentum for the Patriots, tallying match highs and team highs in kills (21).
  • Bolz tied his career high in kills during the match and was his second consecutive match hitting 21 kills.
  • Senior Trevor Kennan led the team on the defensive end, tallying a match high and team high in digs (9).
  • Sophomore Omar Hoyos led the team on the offensive and defensive ends as well, recording 15 kills and nine digs in the win.
  • Freshman Lucas Little led the team in blocks, tallying four in five sets played.
  • The middle block Lucas Little also led the team in hitting percentage, notching a 0.412 mark (10 kills on 17 attempts).
  • Freshman Troy McDonald notched a new career high in assists, recording 51 in the match.
  • The Patriots tallied 12 total blocks in the match.
  • Sacred Heart outhit Mason, 27.0 percent to the Patriots' 24.8 percent.
  • Mason tallied 60 kills to Sacred Heart's 55.

Mason will travel to the West Coast for three matches against ranked opponents.
