Mason Hosts No. 15 NJIT and St. Francis Brooklyn Over the Weekend

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (8-11, 3-6 EIVA) continues their homestand, hosting No. 15 NJIT (11-6, 6-2 EIVA) on Friday Mar. 25 at 7 p.m. inside the RAC.
 
Mason will then host St. Francis Brooklyn (8-8, 3-6 EIVA) on Saturday, Mar. 26 at 5 p.m. inside The RAC.
 
LAST TIME OUT

Mason is coming off a weekend spring with Saint Francis (Pa.) and No. 2 Penn State. The Patriots swept the Red Flash in a three-set victory (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) before falling to the Nittany Lions in three sets (20-25, 13-25, 19-25).

Freshman Troy McDonald continues to contribute in a great way offensively for the Patriots in the past week of play. The setter led the team in assists (47) and hitting percentage (0.583). McDonald had no reception or block errors over the last three matches and only accrued one attack error in six sets played. McDonald currently sits eighth in the conference in assists per set.
 
Freshman Lucas Little continues to lead the team on the defensive end, with a strong effort on the offensive end as well. The middle block recorded a team high four blocks over the weekend, tallying the lone block in the loss to No. 2 Penn State. He currently sits at second in the conference in blocks per set and ranked ninth nationally in blocks per set. Little hit error free this weekend, going 3-for-6 (0.500) on Friday and 3-for-5 (0.600) on Sunday.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
 
NO. 15 NJIT (11-6, 6-2 EIVA)
 
The Highlanders are coming off a weekend sweep of EIVA foe Charleston (WVa). The first win of the weekend came easy to NJIT after sweeping the Golden Eagles in three sets (25-19, 26-24, 25-18). The Highlanders faced difficulty in the second match of the weekend, coming off a win in a decisive fifth set (21-25, 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9).

The Highlanders are led offensively by junior Julian Meissner. The outside hitter leads the team with 202 total kills in 56 sets played. He has also tallied eight assists and 15 service aces so far this season. Meissner earned EIVA Offensive Player of the Week this week for his efforts over the weekend

Junior Martin De Chavarria leads the Highlanders on the defensive end. The middle block has recorded 84 blocks in 63 sets played. He has also tallied 23 digs during the 2022 season. De Chavarria earned EIVA Defensive Player of the Week this week for his efforts over the weekend.
 
The Patriots hold the advantage over the Highlanders, leading the all-time series 57-12.
 
ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN (8-8, 3-6 EIVA)
 
The Terriers are coming off a midweek match against Princeton after falling to SUNY New Paltz this past weekend. St. Francis Brooklyn fought hard against the Hawks before falling in five sets (14-25, 25-13, 25-21, 16-25, 15-6). The Terriers rallied back in the third set, but it was not enough as they fell in three sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-22) to Princeton on Wednesday night.

The Terriers are led by freshman Andrea Lancianese on the offensive end. The middle block has tallied 161 kills in 48 sets played. He also recorded nine assists and three service aces so far this season.
 
On the defensive end, the Terriers are led by junior Bartek Zielinski. The outside hitter recorded 31 blocks in 55 sets of action. He has also tallied 31 digs during the 2022 season.

The Terriers hold the advantage over the Patriots, leading the all-time series 1-0.
