FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (7-8, 2-5 EIVA) resumes conference play this weekend, facing off against Saint Francis (12-6, 6-2 EIVA) on Friday Mar. 18 at 7 p.m. inside the RAC.
Mason will then face No. 2 Penn State (15-3, 8-0 EIVA) on Sunday, Mar. 20 at 3 p.m. inside Eaglebank Arena. The first 1,000 fans can get a green rally towel.
LAST TIME OUT
Mason is coming off a trip to the West Coast, facing off against the former No. 6 Southern California, former No. 7 Pepperdine, and UC Irvine.
Freshman
Troy McDonald contributed in a great way offensively for the Patriots in the past week of play. The setter, playing in his home state, led the team in assists (84), digs (17), and hitting percentage (0.444). McDonald had no reception or block errors over the last three matches and only accrued one attack error in 10 sets played. McDonald currently sits ninth in the conference in assists per set.
Freshman
Lucas Little continues to lead the team on the defensive end. The middle block recorded a team high seven blocks in the loss to UC Irvine. One of the blocks in the match against Pepperdine was a solo block. Little currently leads the team in blocks with 58 in 48 sets played. He currently sits at second in the conference in blocks per set and ranked seventh nationally in blocks per set.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
SAINT FRANCIS (12-6, 6-2 EIVA)
The Red Flash are coming off a two-win weekend with victories over Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 13 Ohio State. Saint Francis (Pa.) swept Fairleigh Dickinson in three sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-19). The Red Flash were able to come away with a victory in four sets (17-25, 25-20, 28-26, 25-22) after facing off against the number 13 team in the country.
The Red Flash are led offensively by junior Blake Liprando. The outside hitter leads the team with 194 total kills in 62 sets played. He has also tallied two assists and 22 service aces so far this season.
Sophomore Thomas Leahey leads the Red Flash on the defensive end. The middle block has recorded 51 blocks in 60 sets played. He has also tallied 26 digs during the 2022 season.
The Red Flash hold the advantage over the Patriots, leading the all-time series 10-1.
NO.2 PENN STATE (15-3, 8-0 EIVA)
The Nittany Lions are coming off a home and home sweep of No. 13 Ohio State. No. 2 Penn State earned their first win over the Buckeyes in three sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) and a win in four sets (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-15) in the second match of the series.
The Nittany Lions are led by senior Brett Wildman on the offensive end. The outside hitter has tallied 213 kills in 61 sets played. He also recorded 13 assists and 22 service aces so far this season
On the defensive end, the Nittany Lions are led by sophomore Toby Ezeonu. The middle block recorded 53 blocks in 61 sets of action. He has also tallied 10 digs during the 2022 season. Ezeonu earned the EIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts in the wins over the Buckeyes.
The Nittany Lions hold the advantage over the Patriots, leading the all-time series 8-2.
