FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (7-8, 2-5 EIVA) continues play in California with a match against No. 7 Pepperdine (8-6, 2-2 MPSF) on Friday, Mar. 11. The match is set for 8 p.m. (5 p.m. PT) inside the Firestone Fieldhouse.
Mason will then head over to UC Irvine (7-8, 0-0 Big West) on Saturday, Mar. 12, for a 10 p.m. (7 p.m. PT) match inside the Bren Events Center.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
NO. 7 PEPPERDINE (8-6, 2-2 MPSF)
The Waves are coming off a weekend split against McKendree. Pepperdine swept McKendree in three sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) the first night of the series. McKendree stormed back the following night to squeak out a win in five sets (21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 11-15).
The Waves are led offensively by graduate student Jaylen Jasper. The outside hitter leads the team with 180 total kills in 51 sets played, averaging 3.53 kills per set. He has also tallied seven assists and 11 service aces so far this season.
Graduate student Austin Wilmot leads the Waves on the defensive end. The middle block has recorded 21 digs in 52 sets played. He has also tallied 58 blocks during the 2022 season.
The Waves hold the advantage over the Patriots, leading the all-time series 10-1, with the last meeting between the two teams came in 2020, where Mason earned a four-set win at The RAC.
UC IRVINE (7-8, 0-0 BIG WEST)
The Anteaters are coming off a win against No. 2 Long Beach State. UC Irvine stunned No. 2 Long Beach State in a five-set thriller on Thursday night. The two teams will play again on Friday Mar. 11.
The Anteaters are led by sophomore Francesco Sani on the offensive end. The outside hitter has tallied 179 kills in 48 sets played. He also recorded 21 assists and 13 service aces so far this season
On the defensive end, the Anteaters are led by freshman Hilir Henno. The outside hitter recorded 88 digs in 50 sets of action. He has also tallied 39 blocks during the 2022 season.
The Anteaters hold the advantage over the Patriots, leading the all-time series 8-2, with the last meeting between the two teams came in 2019, where Mason fell in four-sets at The RAC.
