FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (4-6, 0-4 EIVA) earned a victory in five sets (21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 15-10) against Queens University of Charlotte (6-6, 2-1 IVA) on Saturday night inside the Recreation Athletic Complex.
Mason started the match with a 4-0 lead, battled back and forth with the Royals for the majority of the set before Queens came out on top. tying the set several times before St. Francis Brooklyn slipped away to take the game. The Patriots offense bounced back in a triumphant effort to win the second set and then the third set by a wide margin.
The Green & Gold put up hard offensive and defensive battles, but it was not enough to take home the win in the fourth set, forcing a decisive fifth set. In a comeback from behind effort to pull out the victory.
"I am happy we got a win," said Head Coach
Jay Hosack. " I am not happy that we are not finishing games like we are supposed to. That's another skill that this young team has to learn."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Omar Hoyos led the offensive momentum for the Patriots, tallying team highs in kills (18) and service aces (5).
- This marks the second consecutive match where Hoyos has tallied five service aces.
- The outside hitter Hoyos led the team on the defensive end as well, recording a match high 13 digs.
- Senior Richie Hoff was a team leader in kills (14) and blocks (4).
- Redshirt sophomore Jack Bolz also posted double digits in kills (11) and helped lead the defense with eight digs.
- Freshman Lucas Little tied his career high two service aces.
- Hoyos led the team in hitting percentage (0.438), notching 18 kills on 36 attempts.
- Freshman Troy McDonald set a team high of 28 assists.
- Mason outhit Queens, 23.4 percent to the Royals' 19.8 percent.
- Mason tallied 51 kills to Queens' 48.
- Queens University of Charlotte recorded eight service aces to Mason's 15.
