FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (3-6, 0-4 EIVA) pauses conference play to host Queens University of Charlotte (6-5, 2-1 IVA) on Saturday, Feb. 19. The match is set for 5 p.m. inside the RAC.
LAST TIME OUT
Mason is coming off another weekend of conference play on the road, traveling to NJIT and St. Francis Brooklyn. The Green & Gold were defeated by the Highlanders (20-25, 23-25, 17-25) on Friday and defeated by the Terriers in a thrilling five sets last Saturday (23-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 13-15).
Sophomore
Omar Hoyos led the Patriots on both the offensive and defensive ends this past weekend. The outside hitter put up a career high in kills (23) and a season high in service aces (5). Hoyos earned the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week honors for his 33 kills, six service aces, 15 digs, four blocks, and two solo blocks in eight sets played over the weekend.
Redshirt sophomore
Jack Bolz also recorded great numbers on the offensive and defensive ends for the Patriots. The opposite recorded 22 kills, two service aces, seven digs and eight blocks over the weekend.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
QUEENS UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE (6-5, 2-1 IVA)
The Royals are coming off a weekend split against Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum. Queens University of Charlotte put up a fight against the No. 15 Lincoln Memorial before falling in four sets (25-23, 14-25, 18-25, 16-25). The Royals were able to bounce back in the second match of the weekend, defeating Tusculum in three sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-23).
The Highlanders are led offensively and defensively by junior Daniel Leitao. The setter leads the team with 111 total kills and 74 digs in 38 sets played. He has also tallied 68 assists, four service aces, and 27 blocks in his junior campaign.
The Patriots hold the advantage over the Royals, leading the all-time series 1-0. The first matchup between the two programs occurred in 2019.
