FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women's basketball team fell short on Sunday afternoon, suffering a 50-45 loss to Saint Joseph's inside EagleBank Arena.
The Patriots (8-15, 2-9) struggled to make baskets late in the game as the Hawks escaped with the victory, 50-45.
Sophomore Taylor Jameson led the Patriots with game-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. She was the lone Patriot to make a three-pointer in the contest, finishing with two (2-4 3FG). She has scored in double figures eight times in Atlantic 10 play.
Senior Amaya Scott added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Mason shot 31.9 percent from the field (15-47) and just 15.4 percent from three-point range (2-13). The Patriots struggled from the free throw, making 13 of their 22 attempts (.591), and was 6-of-12 from the charity stripe in the second half.
Mason went on a 6-0 run to lead 8-2 with 5:57 left in the first quarter. After the two teams traded baskets, Jameson hit a three-pointer with time expiring for a five-point Mason advantage (18-13).
A scoring drought of nearly six minutes in the second quarter hurt the Patriots as SJU outscored Mason 12-5 in the period to lead by two at the break (25-23). The Patriots committed 10 of their 13 turnovers in the first half.
Jameson scored the first five points of the third quarter to give Mason the lead (28-25). The two teams once again exchanged buckets as the score was tied with one quarter remaining (33-33).
The Hawks notched back-to-back baskets to start the final quarter (38-33). Mason pulled within one with under five minutes remaining (42-41), before SJU went on a 6-1 run (48-42). Mason had chances to take the lead late in the game, but the baskets didn't fall. SJU escaped with the 50-45 victory.
Up next, Mason makes a trip to the District to take on Revolutionary Rival George Washington on Wednesday (Feb. 16). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center.
