Patriots Continue EIVA Action on the Road

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team (3-4) travels to New Jersey to continue play at NJIT (4-2) on Friday, Feb. 11. The match is set for 4 p.m. inside the NJIT Wellness and Events Center and will be streamed on ESPN3.
 
Mason will then head over to St. Francis Brooklyn (3-2) on Saturday, Feb. 12, for a 6 p.m. match inside the Genovesi Center.

LAST TIME OUT
Mason is coming off conference opening play this past weekend against Saint Francis (Pa.) and No. 5 Penn State. The Green & Gold were defeated by the Red Flash (21-25, 27-29, 19-25) on Friday and defeated by the Nittany Lions last Saturday in three sets (16-25, 16-25, 23-25).

Redshirt sophomore Jack Bolz led the Patriots on both the offensive end. The opposite recorded 22 kills and one service ace over the weekend.
 
Redshirt sophomore Chey Cooper was a force to be reckoned with off the bench for the Patriots in Friday night's match at Saint Francis (Pa.). The outside hitter recorded back-to-back service aces in the second set and seven kills in two sets, good for second best on the team for the match.
 
Sophomore Colin Heath led the team on the defensive end. The outside hitter recorded seven digs and two blocks in the loss against Saint Francis (Pa.).  
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
 
NJIT (4-2, 0-0 EIVA)
 
The Highlanders are coming off a weekend sweep against Long Island University. The first match against the two teams was played at NJIT, resulting in the three sets to be won by a large margin (25-19, 25-16, 25-18). The second match was played at Fairleigh Dickinson, causing the sets to be closer in margin (25-18, 25-22, 25-22). This will be the Highlanders first conference match of the season.

The Highlanders are led offensively by freshman Alessandro Negri. The outside hitter leads the team with 68 total kills in 22 sets played. He has also tallied 14 assists and 12 service aces in his freshman campaign.

Junior Julian Meissner leads the Highlanders on the defensive end. The opposite has recorded 40 digs in 19 sets played. He has also tallied 13 blocks during the 2022 season.
 
The Patriots hold the advantage over the Highlanders, leading the all-time series 57-11, with the last meeting between the two teams came in the EIVA semifinals in 2021.
 
ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN (3-2, 1-1 EIVA)
 
The Terriers are coming off a weekend split against the Charleston (WVa.). St. Francis Brooklyn was able to squeak out a win in a thrilling five sets (14-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11). Charleston (WVa.) swept the Terriers in three sets (23-25, 22-25, 16-25) the following night. This is St. Francis Brooklyn's first season in the EIVA.

The Terriers are led by freshman Andrea Lancianese on the offensive end. The middle block has tallied 65 kills in 18 sets played. He also recorded four assists and three service aces in five matches
 
On the defensive end, the Terriers are led by junior Nicola Iannelli. The outside hitter/libero recorded 30 digs in 12 sets of action. Freshman middle block Caleb Lipscomb leads the team in blocks, tallying 11 so far this season.

This is the first meeting between the two teams in school history.
